“A YEAR OF SURPRISES”

“But those who wait on the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.”

[Isaiah 40:31]

INTRODUCTION TO FASTING & PRAYER

Definition of fasting: Biblically, fasting is abstaining from food, drink, sleep or sex to focus on a period of spiritual growth. Specifically, we humbly deny something of the flesh to glorify God, enhance our spirit, and go deeper in our prayer life.

Fasting is a personal event: “Moreover, when you fast, do not be like the hypocrites, with a sad countenance. For they disfigure their faces that they may appear to men to be fasting. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, so that you do not appear to men to be fasting, but to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly” [Matthew 6:16-18].

Fasting can be from things besides food: “Let the husband render to his wife the affection due her, and likewise also the wife to her husband. The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. And likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. Do not deprive one another except with consent for a time, that you may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come together again so that Satan does not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.” [1 Corinthians 7:3-5].

Jesus did not require fasting as a part of Christianity: “Then the disciples of John came to Him, saying, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but Your disciples do not fast?” And Jesus said to them, “Can the friends of the bridegroom mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast.” [Matthew 9:14-15]

Fasting is a form of worship: “…and this woman was a widow of about eighty-four years, who did not depart from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day.” [Luke 2:37].

A fast may be either absolute or partial: Examples of absolute (complete) fasts: [Deuteronomy 9:9, 18] “. . . forty days and forty nights. I neither ate bread nor drank water…” [Ezra 10:6] “Ezra. . . he ate no bread and drank no water, for he mourn. . .” [Esther 4:16, Acts 9:9, Acts 27:33]

Examples of partial fasts (abstinence from certain foods only): [Daniel 10:3] “I ate no pleasant bread, neither came flesh nor wine in my mouth, neither did I anoint myself at all, till three whole weeks were fulfilled.” [I Kings chapter 17]

A few Scriptures & Occasions of prayer and fasting in the Bible

There are several scriptures and occasions for fasting and prayer. Listed below are a few:

Praying for health: “…David therefore pleaded with God for the child, and David fasted and went in and lay all night on the ground.” [2 Samuel 12:16]

Praying for safety: “Then I proclaimed a fast there at the river of Ahava, that we might humble ourselves before our God, to seek from Him the right way for us and our little ones and all our possessions.” [Ezra 8:21]

As an act of repentance: “When they had assembled at Mizpah, they drew water and poured it out before the LORD. On that day they fasted and there they confessed, We have sinned against the LORD. And Samuel was leader of Israel at Mizpah” [1 Samuel 7:6].

As a sign of mourning: “They mourned and wept and fasted till evening for Saul and his son Jonathan, and for the army of the LORD and the house of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword” [2 Samuel 1:12].

Before making an important decision: “While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, 'Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.' So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off….Paul and Barnabas appointed elders for them in each church and, with prayer and fasting, committed them to the Lord, in whom they had put their trust” [Acts 13:2-3; 14:23].

Intercession for the people of God: [Exodus 24:18,  Deuteronomy 9:8-9, 12-20, 23-27,                 Ezra 10:6, Daniel 9:3-4, Joel 2:12-14, 17-18, Jonah 3:5-10]

Humbling and chastening of oneself: [I Kings 21:27-29] “... Seest thou how Ahab humbleth himself before me?” [Psalms 35:13] “... I humbled myself with fasting ...” [Psalms 69:10] “I wept, and chastened my soul with fasting ...”

Seeking the Lord and His way: [ Judges 20:26-28] “Then all the children of Israel, and all the people, went up, and came unto the house of God, and wept, and sat there before the Lord, and fasted that day until evening, and ... inquired of the Lord ... (whether to) go out to battle ... And the Lord said, Go up ...” [II Chronicles 20:3] “And Jehoshaphat feared, and set himself to seek the Lord, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah.” [Ezra 8:21-23] “Then I proclaimed a fast ... that we might afflict ourselves before our God, to seek of him a right way for us, and for our little ones, and for all our substance. For I was ashamed to ask the king ... to help us against the enemy in the way: because we had spoken unto the king, saying, The hand of our God is upon all them for good that seek him ... So we fasted and besought our God for this: and he was intreated of us.”

Spiritual deliverance: [Isaiah 58:6] “Is not this the fast that I have chose? To loose the bands ... to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?” [Mark 9:29, Matthew 17:21] “And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.”

Seeking assistance in time of fear: [II Chronicles 20:3] “And Jehoshaphat feared, and set himself to seek the Lord, and proclaimed a fast ...”

Lacking material provision; in need: [II Corinthians 11:27] “... in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often ...”
